Dr. Baker will discuss differences in sleep between men and women. She will also discuss her research about the influence on sleep quality and sleep architecture of the hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle as well as during the transition to menopause, when insomnia is a common symptom.
About the Speaker
Fiona Baker, Ph.D., is a sleep physiologist in SRI International’s Human Sleep Research Laboratory in the Center for Health Sciences. She joined SRI as a research scientist in 2005. Her main research interests are sleep in women, body temperature and sleep interactions, and circadian rhythms. She received her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 2001, after which she completed a three-year post-doctoral study investigating the neurobiology of sleep with Dr. Dennis McGinty in the Department of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles. Baker is also an Honorary Research Associate of the Brain Function Research Unit, School of Physiology, University of the Witwatersrand.
